Keep the flame steady, visible, and controlled
Safe candle use depends on preparation and attention. Trim the wick, clear the area, watch the flame, and extinguish the candle before leaving the room or going to sleep.
Prepare the candle
Trim the wick before each burn, following the candle maker's care directions. Remove loose wick pieces from the wax and keep the vessel on a stable, heat-safe surface away from paper, fabric, children, and pets.
Watch the burn
Keep the flame away from windows, fans, vents, and moving air. Stop burning when the wax is nearly gone or when the vessel becomes too hot to handle safely.
Extinguish with control
Use a snuffer or carefully blow out the flame without splashing liquid wax. Never move a candle while the wax is liquid, and confirm that the wick is fully out before leaving it unattended.
Clear answers before the next step
Can a candle burn while I am out of the room?
No. Extinguish every candle before leaving the room, going to sleep, or moving the vessel.
